Whatever a Spider Can has a new reporter – Meet Nicoli Raymond
“Aww, look. I’m so dramatic.”
Hey, there. My name is Nicoli Raymond and I’m a new staff contributor on Whatever A Spider Can. I’m currently a student attending college in the US, with a focus on screen writing. I was introduced to Spider-Man through the Rami films and immediately set out to my local library to get the books. Within the course of a year had read every Spider-Man book my library had.
Why do you like Spider-Man?: Like a lot of people I was an outcast when I was young. A wallflower who didn’t know a cha-cha from a waltz. I needed an escape, a friend. I found that in Spider-Man. I think Spidey is a symbol of hope. The disenfranchised” marvel” at his exploits. Peter Parker is the ultimate down-on-his-luck everyman, and Spider-Man, with his mask, can be anybody. We’re all Spider-Man and we’re all Peter Parker. That’s the beauty of the character.
What is your favorite Spider-Man story Arc? : I don’t think I have a singular favorite story. I loved Spider-Island. It was fun. That’s what I like, fun comics. Not that I don’t like the occasional dark and moody book, but if I’m spending my money, I’d like to have fun with it.
Besides Spider-Man, my favorite comic book characters are Noh-Varr, Booster Gold, Cyclops, Lex Luthor, Scarlet Witch, and Captain Cold. I currently read Amazing Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2099, Silver Surfer, Legendary Star-Lord, Guardians of the Galaxy, Justice League, Multiversity, Batgirl, and The Wicked and The Divine.
Outside of the comics, my favorite adaptation is The Spectacular Spider-Man. It was complex and honest. The designs are absolutely beautiful in their simplicity. My favorite movie is Spider-Man 2. Alfred Molina’s performance actually inspired me to do theater when I was younger, although oddly enough none of the Spider-Man films had any influence on my decision to go into film.
In addition to comics I enjoy reading a wide variety of material, from Shakespeare to chick lit to theoretical physics. I am an avid TV watcher, and am currently enjoying The Flash and A to Z (the ratings are incredibly low, please watch it). My favorite show though, is Community. My musical tastes are eclectic, ranging from 60’s girl groups to modern day bands like Arcade Fire.
I’m excited to be writing for Whatever a Spider Can and I hope you readers enjoy my work. Thanks for reading.
