Ultron is extremely hard to destroy

The Avengers never throw Ultron in jail. Since he’s a robot, it’s okay to destroy him instead. It’s just that trying to do it and actually accomplishing it are very different things.

Part of the problem is physical. Early on, Ultron learned how to rebuild himself out of adamantium, the super strong fictional Marvel metal that is nearly impossible to damage or destroy (it’s also the substance that coats Wolverine’s bones and claws). Because of this, defeating Ultron usually requires damaging something inside him instead, like when the Human Torch overheated his interior components with his Nova Flame during Secret Wars. The Scarlet Witch’s hex magic has also proven effective at messing up his insides.

Alas, even that doesn’t guarantee you’ve seen the last of Ultron, because he’s proven extremely adept at beaming his consciousness into other robot bodies or nearby computers. Even his head can hold onto his personality for quite some time until it finds another body.

Expect to see both of these characteristics in the film version of Ultron. There’s been no sign of adamantium in the Marvel Cinematic Universe yet, but the teaser trailer shows the robot coating himself in something. Fan speculation says it’s vibranium, another fictional metal not quite as strong as adamantium but still much tougher than other materials. And it would be quite shocking indeed if the movie Ultron didn’t know how to jump from body to body.
