BSP Roundtable: Who Should Marvel Get To Play Captain Marvel?
By Nick Tylwalk
Emily Blunt
Nominated by: Roger Lee
My pick for Captain Marvel is Emily Blunt. She is a great actress, can pass for an athletic, adult military officer (as Carol Danvers), and she showed in Edge of Tomorrow (a great sci-fi movie IMHO), that she can kick alien butt! In that regard, she reminds me a bit of the younger Sigourney Weaver in the original Alien. Also, in Edge of Tomorrow, she did play a military officer who was quite good at kicking Tom Cruise around. Blunt’s work in sci-fi also includes doing a great job in Looper with Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. In that role, she showed great emotional range as well. In both roles, she was very believable in crafting a strong female character who could match the testosterone-laden male stars. This is the type of woman who must portray Carol Danvers in Captain Marvel.
Also, I must say that while I was quite happy with the new Marvel movie announcements, I was disappointed in the lack of a Black Widow vehicle. While Captain Marvel is an obvious choice to expand the “cosmic” angle ala Guardians of the Galaxy, the first choice for a new female superhero flick should have been Scarlett Johansson and Black Widow!
Ronda Rousey
Nominated by: Frankie Koelle
I think Ronda Rousey should play our Carol Danvers. She’s good looking, is built in a feminine way, has the attitude, and I could actually picture her suiting up and kicking butt with the Avengers as she proved in the Expendables 3.
(Editor’s note: But could Dana White and the UFC afford to lend out their biggest attraction long enough to let her star as Captain Marvel?)
