Spider-Verse Field Guide: Know Your Spiders
By Nick Tylwalk
Spider-UK
Billy Braddock, Earth-833
Not many Spider-Men are also members of the Captain Britain Corps. In fact, Billy might be the only one who is, and since that group is a police force for the multiverse, that gives him a little bit different angle on the whole power and responsibility thing.
Spider-UK was one of the characters created especially for the event, but he’s been pretty prominent so far. It’s not impossible to see him sticking around … if he survives.
Spider-Girl
May “Mayday” Parker, Earth-982
May is the daughter of Peter and Mary Jane Parker in the alternate future depicted in Marvel’s now deceased MC2 line. She started life as a normal girl but manifested powers similar to her dad once she became a teenager, and went on to become the most notable hero of the MC2 age. If you enjoy jokes that break the fourth wall, you could also say she has an additional power, which is to inspire fervent letter-writing campaigns to stave off the cancellation of her own series.
It’s implied in the first chapter of Spider-Verse that May’s parents might be dead, though her younger brother was rescued by another Spider-Man and taken to the one place that is safe from Morlun and family. Given her enduring popularity, she’s a lock to play a big role in the story as it unfolds.
Spider-Ham
Peter Porker, Earth-25
Count this guy as one of the Spider-Men that fans were pretty excited to see before Spider-Verse even got ramped up. Believe it or not, he actually had his own ongoing series that lasted 17 issues back in the 80s.
Also hard to believe but true: Spider-Ham has more of a legitimate claim to being a spider than anyone else on this list. That’s because in his original story, he was a spider that was bitten by a radioactive, anthropomorphic pig. That turned him into a walking, talking pig in his own right, but while maintaining the proportional speed and strength of a spider.
He also named himself Spider-Ham, in case you were wondering. Though ht’s typically played for laughs, and the Star Comics he featured in were definitely parodies of regular Marvel comics, he’s set to be played fairly straight in Spider-Verse, by the looks of things. And if Dan Slott kills him off, there will be anger.
