The Evolution of Alfred
Bruce Wayne’s Butler Alfred has always been his most loyal companion, often going far above and beyond the mere role of employee. Of course he’s evolved throughout the years in the comics, but the New York Post has a pretty good look at the way he’s been portrayed on TV over the years as well, from his role as a sort of bumbling comic relief to the mentor, father figure and usually ex-British intelligence agent we know today.

Here’s a blurb from the article:
"It wasn’t until the ’70s, however, that an explanation was given for Alfred’s varied non-housekeeping skills — such as field medicine, marksmanship and makeup artistry. It was established that before he came into Batman’s employ, Alfred had actually been an actor and a member of the British Secret Service, who only came to the Waynes at the dying request of their valet, Jarvis — Alfred’s estranged father. This Alfred was quite a dashing figure, having romanced a French agent during WWII and fathering an illegitimate daughter (who grew up to romance Batman.)"
And of course now we have Sean Pertwee in the role of Bruce’s mentor & father figure in Gotham, trying his best to raise Bruce right. It’s an interesting thing to see as we’ve rarely gotten a glimpse of Alfred as a younger man, we almost always see him in his elder years. Given that Warner Bros. is making new Batman movies, we’ll most likely see yet another new Alfred in those and it’ll be interesting to see how the two compare.
