James Gunn has updated DC fans about Superman: Legacy and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow and things sound more than promising.

Recently, DC Studios co-chair/co-CEO and Superman: Legacy writer and director, James Gunn, stated the writer’s and actor’s strikes have not affected the release date for the Big Boy Scout in Blue which is slated to hit theaters on July 11, 2025. Gunn confirmed this via X (formerly Twitter) per SuperheroHype.

A day after he announced who the screenwriter would be to pen the first live-action Supergirl motion picture for modern audiences in the 21st century. The Vampire Diaries and The Blacklist actress and playwright, Ana Nogueira, have been tapped to write the DC Studios film Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Gunn declared this on his Instagram account via Deadline.

Superman: Legacy latest news is quite exciting

The film which has David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan as the Man of Steel and Lois Lane, respectively, has already been cast amidst the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Before the strikes ended, a VFX Supervisor behind some of the Guardians of the Galaxy films praised Gunn’s script, saying it was “a great” one. The writer of this column already reported it was expected that these strikes would not affect the production.

Gunn submitted a draft before the writer’s strike happened and pre-production had begun at least several months before the SAG-AFRA strike had started July 14. As it stands, while praising his “talented crew”, Superman: Legacy is on course for its original release date.

The most recent update came on November 20 with the confirmation that Nicholas Hoult, who was in the running to play Superman, has been cast as Lex Luthor. Word of Hoult’s casting comes days after  María Gabriela de Faría landed the role of villain The Engineer.

Who is the writer for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow?

Better known for her recurring role as a vampire hunter, Perry Ares, during Season 7 of The Vampire Diaries and being on The Michael J. Fox Show, Nogueira also originated the role of Eliza Hamilton in the Vassar workshop production for the musical, Hamilton. Her experience outside of writing for stage and being in front of the camera as a writer was a 12-minute short film nominated at SXSW directed by her co-writer, Michael Stahl-David, called “We Win”.

Given her resume as a screenwriter is pretty light, it must be presumed Gunn may have been blown away by Nogueira’s pitch for Woman of Tomorrow, despite her featherweight screenwriting credits if at all in cinema.

It is not known what the film will be about except that it is going to be adapted in some shape or form to the Tom King and Bilquis Evely comic book miniseries of the same name published by DC Comics. For my theory on what this sci-fi epic could explore, check the link to the feature article here. Whether it will be faithful to the source material may be a cause for speculation.

It is too early to gather who may direct the film and whether or not Sasha Calle from The Flash may reprise her role as Kara Zor-El/Supergirl is up in the air though it may be likely whoever may take up the reigns of Woman of the Tomorrow may recast.
