That Batman Themed Hockey Match

A few weeks ago we brought you news of an upcoming hockey match between the Toledo Walleye and the Evansville Iceman. Why would a Batman blog cover hockey? Because it was Batman themed, that’s why.

"We’ll be celebrating Batman through the Saturday, November 22 game as part of our “Heroes Night” celebration. The Walleye and visiting Evansville IceMen will get in on the fun, donning special edition Batman and Riddler-themed jerseys. The game worn jerseys will be sold after the final whistle during a live auction, with proceeds benefiting the Muscular Dystrophy Association, March of Dimes and the Walleye Wishing Well.Dress up as your favorite superhero for a chance to win prizes, and get ready for a standing ovation as we salute our local heroes from the police and fire department."

They also auctioned something pretty cool to raise money for charity:

"BID ON AN ADAM WEST SIGNED BATMAN JERSEYScore a unique piece of Toledo hockey history and Batman memorabilia. Up for auction is a Batman-themed Walleye jersey – just like the team will wear this Saturday – autographed by TV star Adam West! The auction ends on Friday, November 21 at 6 p.m. Proceeds will benefit MDA and the Walleye Wishing Well charitable fund. MORE INFO"

Here’s how the game went, according to the Walleye website:

"A standing room only crowd of 8,000 watched Toledo race away from Evansville in a 6-2 win Saturday night at the Huntington Center. Toledo has an overall record of 10-3-0-1 on the season and is 6-2-0-1 at home. It didn’t take long for the Walleye to grab a lead as Kyle Bonis scored just 2:13 into the first period. At 4:08 of the second period, Anthony Luciani scored his 7th goal of the season on a one timer from the left circle. The four goal second period continued for the Walleye as Marek Tvrdon finished a breakaway at 5:30. Following an Evansville goal, Defenseman Joel Chouinard followed the play to the front of the net and tapped in his second goal of the season. Captain Jared Nightingale scored a shorthanded goal at 18:47 to put Toledo up 5-1. In the third period, Kyle Bonis scored a power play at 1:34 to collect his team best 10th goal of the year. Toledo finished the game with 40 shots on goal while holding Evansville to just 27. Walleye Notes:  Goaltender Jeff Lerg made 25 saves on the 26 shots he faced and has a record of 5-2-0 on the season. Goaltender Neil Conway played the final 8:39 of the game. Toledo finished the game 1-4 on the power play and has at least one man advantage goal in 11 of the 14 games to start the season."

I’m pretty sure I’m a Walleye fan now. If you want memorabilia from the game or the team in general, you can check out their store.
