Details on Spider-Man’s Possible Entry into the MCU – Cap 3 and Beyond?

Spider-Man fans are abuzz after the recent Sony hacks revealed a tsunami of news, much of which refers to our favorite Superhero. There seems to be a back and forth on how the Sony + Marvel movie discussions are proceeding; some say that negotiations haven’t panned out favorably, while others are speaking to a different tune – a tune that I hope I’ll be humming along to.

News website The Daily Beast recently reported an article stating that email correspondence between Sony executives Michael De Luca, co-president of production for Columbia Pictures, and Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment, led to a particularly interesting passage by De Luca:

"“I really feel, in my heart of hearts, that the new spiderman [sic] in cap 3 could just appear in his own film, be it sinister six or a kick ass spidey film of his own, after that intro in cap 3 and people would be cool with it.”"

This simple sentence hints that if all goes according to plan, Spider-Man would be introduced into the MCU during Captain America 3. While this goes against some talk that Marvel has decided to use the Black Panther as a Spider-Man replacement in the Civil War event, I think Marvel would be smart to take this option if it were presented to them (and I’m sure many fans agree that the Web-Head belongs the Civil War!) Moving forward, more ideas from De Luca’s mind were revealed in another email:

"“[Simon] Kinberg told me fox is steering Xmen and Fantastic Four into an eventual team up film,” wrote De Luca. “Seems to me maybe, since the Spider-man universe itself is deep, you guys should look at sinister six, new spidey, female movie and venom as linked pieces leading to eventual mega movie ala Feige and Fox and not stand alone single films. It’s early in all these and you can still map out a blueprint for connective tissue.”"

This seems to beget the idea akin to the Avengers coming together, where each movie of the Spider-Man franchise would be a set piece leading to a greater game board once everything has come together. There are many Spider-Man events one could choose from that would make a killer team-up blockbuster (and though Spider-Verse would be almost impossible to film – it’d be awesome, imagine bringing back Maguire to play one of the Spider-Men)

All of this information is reinforced by a recent reddit post by a redditor aptly named insider89film. Though reddit posts must be taken with a grain of salt, leaks on reddit have turned out to be true in the past; from insider news to a certain wave of photos, reddit has been an at times reliable source of leaked information. In his/her post, the insider claims that Sony Japan and Sony Pictures have negotiated a deal that should be announced during Sony’s Spidey Summit in January if it is accepted between the two parties.

Essentially, Marvel will take creative control over Spider-Man films whilst giving Sony a share of the profits. In a statement that agrees with the above emails from De Luca, the insider claims that Spider-Man will have a small but important cameo in Captain America 3, and his own movie (sans origin story) would be released sometime in 2018. Development of the Marvel script is underway, and potential directors are being vetted. As for who’ll play the part, the post goes on to share a list of possible actors who would take the role of Peter Parker, as Andrew Garfield is apparently not Marvel’s first choice of Spider-Man; however, they would be willing to offer Garfield another role.

Seeing as these two separate sources both give word of the same idea, I am hopeful that all of these talks and claims will come to fruition and be revealed at the Spidey Summit. And who doesn’t want to see a cinematic Spidey rocking the Iron Spider suit? In any case, as we await the summit and more information on Peter Parker coming to the MCU, stay tuned with WhateveraSpiderCan for more Spider-Man related news and stories.
