The Scene: Ultron’s Sentinels

Ultron commands an army of his own — numerous drones armed with a cache of abilities.  These drones are known as Ultron’s Sentinels and they were built from Tony Stark’s Iron Legion.  In the Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer, they seem to be bent on humanity’s extinction — which isn’t much of a change from their first appearance in the comics.

From the Pages of Comics

In the comics, the Ultron Sentinels make their first and only appearance in Age of Ultron #1 (March 2013). With no origin story for the robots, it’s implied that they were conceived and created by Ultron, who existed in the future.  In Avengers: Age of Ultron, Tony Stark recreates the Iron Legion (seen in Iron Man 3) and develops Ultron, a peacekeeping program. Its original purpose was to protect the world on automatic — without the need of the Avengers. As Ultron’s intelligence grew, he deemed humanity a threat, which led him to conclude that genocide is the only option.
