The Scene: Scarlet Witch Powering Up
In the Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer, Wanda Maximoff, a.k.a. Scarlet Witch, comes out of a doorway already powered up and ready to use her reality-altering abilities. Exactly what are her abilities and how have they been portrayed?
From the Pages of Comics
Scarlet Witch was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and introduced in X-Men #4 (March 1964) along with her brother, Quicksilver. As the daughter of Magneto, a mutant, she has the ability to manipulate reality via hexes, which are short-range and limited to her line of sight. These hexes are closely tied with her state-of-mind. If she’s tired or exhausted, her hexes may not work and will actually backfire (undoing her previous hexes). She’s been able to ignite flammable objects, remove air, deflect projectiles, open doors, cause objects to explode, create force fields, and defend against magical attacks.
