The Scene: Nick Fury Returns
Last seen in Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Nick Fury goes into hiding and completely disbands S.H.I.E.L.D. He only has a few trusted allies and vows to clean house of all Hydra “rats.” It seems that he’s coming back out into the world to help our heroes in the Avengers: Age of Ultron. Fury’s commitment to S.H.I.E.L.D.’s ideals is legendary in the comics, as he’s been known to never give in to a fight.
From the Pages of Comics
- The original Nick Fury (characterized as Caucasian and now retired), in Dark Reign, discovers that S.H.I.E.L.D. has always been controlled by Hydra. He uses his Secret Warriors and hires the new Howling Commandos as his army.
- The Ultimate Nick Fury (based on the likeness of Samuel L. Jackson), in Ultimate Mystery #2, decides to infiltrate Hydra from the inside by using a bio-camouflage that changes his appearance, which actually gives him the visage of the original Nick Fury who was Caucasian. Going by the name “Scorpio”, Fury joins Hydra.
