The Scene: Captain America’s Broken Shield
Yes, the legendary Vibranium shield is seen broken at the end of the Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer. You’re probably screaming at the screen and saying, “How can this be!? It can’t be broken! What’s next? Are you going to tell us that Thor is now a woman Wolverine has died Tony Stark is no longer arrogant?” Well, this is the comics, so even that’s a possibility. In reality — or technically, comics reality — Captain America’s shield has been broken before.
From the Pages of Comics
Early in the comics, Captain America had his shield destroyed many times, but it would always reappear perfect in the next issue. This was retconned and explained that Tony Stark borrowed the original shield to study it and Captain America was given steel replicas to use in the meantime. In later stories, the actual Vibranium shield was seen destroyed by Doctor Doom, Thanos, Molecule Man, and also from the effects of a misaligned molecule in the shield itself. The shield was restored each time with the help of powerful entities or by unintended events.
