The Scene: The Menacing Ultron
The Avengers — and probably most of humanity — will have their work cut out for them when they face off with the titular villain Ultron in the Avengers: Age of Ultron. A powerful artifical intelligence / automaton created by Tony Stark, Ultron will ultimately turn on his maker. But how evil is Ultron, and how powerful is he? The comics are the best resource for the answers.
From the Pages of Comics
Ultron first appeared in a cameo in Avengers #64 (July 1968) as the Crimson Cowl. In Avengers #55 (August 1968), the character is given the official name of Ultron-5. In Avengers #56 – #57 (October 1968 – November 1968), flashbacks reveal that Ultron was created by Hank Pym based on his own brain patterns. In Avengers #66 – #68 (July 1969 – September 1969), Ultron would upgrade his body with Adamantium. Having various abilities throughout the years, he’s been seen to exhibit superhuman levels of strength, speed, stamina, durability (especially after his Adamantium upgrades), reflexes, flight at subsonic speeds, various energy-based weapons, and an Encephalo-ray. The Encephalo-ray has been used to induce a death-like coma or place victims under hypnotic control.
