Amazing Spider-Man #10 Recap
By C.T. Smith
The Amazing Spider-Man #10 starts on all cylinders with Spider-Verse Part Two: Superior Force, starting where the stellar Amazing Spider-Man #9 left off. We open to Earth-1610 where Miles and Jess are being attacked by Verna and her “hounds.” It looks like they’re being overtaken when suddenly a portal opens with 3 figures donning familiar silhouettes leaping from it. In the next three panels we see Assassin Spider-Man, Spider-Punk of Earth-138, and the Superior Spider-Man quickly dispatch the three hounds with one strike (or bullet) each. As Miles is perplexed upon recognizing Spider-Man, Spider-Punk tells them to “Spider up or die!” Miles and Jessica quickly change into their Spider costumes, and with a final glance and taunt towards Verna, Miles and company escape through the portal leaving Verna alone and seething.
The next page returns us to Earth-13, the Safe Zone. A large gathering of Spider-(Wo)Men are discussing how the skeptical Spider-Man-616 is a chosen one; Spider-UK explains that he’s the only person to fight an inheritor and win -and we see him explain that in other words, he’s the boy who lived (Harry Parker anyone?). Their conversation is cut short when they get a reading from a second team, who we know is the Superior Force.
The comic then switches to Silk’s inner monologue: she wonder whether she shares a bond with any of the other Peter Parker’s present, but the only person whose pheromones react with hers is Kaine’s, though the feeling is a little off. We cut back to the main conversation, where the Spideys agree to make contact with the other team and bring them to the safe zone. Spider-UK equips Peter with a teleporter and three teams are formed, though Peter demands that Gwen stays behind (for obvious reasons known to everyone but Gwen herself), and Old Man Peter demands that Silk stays behind as well. As the teams jump through the portals, Silk defies their “reasons” for leaving her behind, and jumps in after them.
We zone in onto the Superior Force, and get a Spider-Awesome two page spread of the two Spider-Squads facing off; with Spider-Ham and Spider-Monkey sharing a humorous interaction as Spider-Monkey declares the concept of his animal counterpart insane. Ashley Barton, Spider-Woman of Earth-807128 goes to warn SpOck of the new arrivals, and Peter is shocked to see the man who recently had control of his body once more parading around as the “Superior” Spider-Man. Superior Spider-Man believes that they’re there to join the ranks of his army, and the Spiders on Pete’s team are confused as to why the scanners say SpOck is from Earth-616. Kaine thinks it’s another clone, but Peter explains that the past event that knocked SpOck into the future, the year 2099 Miguel (Spider-Man 2099) soon realizes, must have created another version of him.
Spider-UK asks that the Superior Army follow them back to the safe zone, but SpOck admonishes him; he claims that for months he’s been studying the Inheritors, fighting them, and winning. He reveals a cloaking device he built to mask the Spider-“Scent” that attracts their foes, but we learn that Kaine’s readings are abnormally high, and Silk’s levels are off the charts. Old Man Spider-Man cryptically explains that Kaine is “the Other,” a being unique to all dimensions, and that Silk is “the Bride,” a special totem.Just as SpOck refutes the concept of totems as superstitious, we see Daemos burst through a golden portal in all of his Inheritor glory -but SpOck is prepared. His army flies into motion as the long range fighters strike their foe: Assassin Spider-Man’s, Cyborg Spider-Man’s, and Noir’s guns rapidly firing. The second wave is called in as Ashley Barton, Six-Arm and Spider-Monkey launch themselves towards Daemos- who has a big grin on his face. The three of them quickly go flying through the side of the building as Daemos tosses them away. With a savage strike through his chest, Daemos shorts out and kills Cyborg Spider-Man. We see a brief interaction between Miles and Peter, as Miles seems confused about Peter and the “boss-guy” sounding like the exact same person. Mayday and Kaine follow up and all the Spiders begin to leap at Daemos.
SpOck decides that enough is enough and in a multi-overhead strike he takes out their opponent. SpOck shares the fact that Kaine in fact did the most damage, but he got the killing blow. Peter announces that Daemos should have crumbled to dust upon dying, but Miguel notices that the Superior Spider-Man augmented his weapon with 2099 tech, including a stasis charge that will let them study their enemy’s corpse.
Old Man Spider-Man tells them that they’re all fumbling around in the dark, and that he’s the only one who understands what’s going on, In the next stretch panel we see a pair of ominous hands closing around his head as he begins to expose what he knows. We see his head snap back as Daemos and the twins appear through another golden portal. Battle erupts into chaos and Assassin Spider-Man unfortunately gets his life force drained by Daemos. Ben and Kaine, realizing that the enemy is using clones to stay alive, open a portal to the clone’s origin dimension; Jessica Drew follows them as well, since she “knows about this stuff.”
As Miles and Peter are about to escape, Old Man Spider-Man calls out to him, and we see his true identity revealed: Ezekiel. In his universe, Morlun defeated and killed Spider-Man, so Ezekiel had a suit made and carried on his legacy. He implores Pete to protect the Other, the Scion, and the Bride. Silk swings by suddenly, stealing Pete’s teleporter and warping to another world in an attempt to draw them away. Spider-Woman-616 and Noir are appointed as each squad’s representative to follow her -the twins chase after their party soon after. Meanwhile, 2099 and Six-Arm run away whilst carrying Daemos’ former body. Spider-Man, SpOck, and company finally withdraw to the safezone. In the closing panels, Peter’s spider sense goes off as the self appointed Superior Spider-Man declares that he is in charge, poised and ready to take on Pete.
