Amazing Spider-Man #10 Review
By C.T. Smith
Spider-Verse Part Two: The Superior Force continues the Spider themed roller coaster ride through the Multiverse.
Though issue #9 was certainly a strong starting off point for the main event, Amazing Spider-Man #10 really takes Spider-Verse to the level of expected potential readers had fostered upon its reveal months ago. Four important things happen here: the two Spider armies unite, a no-holds barred battle breaks out between the Inheritors and the Totems, Old Man Spider-Man’s identity is revealed, and the Superior Spider-Man challenges Peter Parker for control of the Spider Squads. This sounds a lot to pack into one issue; however, once again the 18 page comic manages to touch on these plot elements without feeling compressed or condensed.
The meeting of the two teams is the highlight of the issue, and the 2 page thread that showcases this moment is detailed and stunning. If you’ve ever wondered what a Spider-Monkey meeting a Spider-Pig looks like you’re in for a treat. Like I mentioned in my other review, Oliver Coipel’s penciling is sharp, and the face work is less rough than in the last issue. And if you should compliment him on anything, it should be his talent at drawing aerial motion or leaping actions.
As some of the Spiders split off into their respective spin-off comics, Amazing Spider-Man #10 acted as a hub for giving these characters reasons to leave. As such, we get a few pages of the teams leaving one by one and an editor’s footnote telling us which issue to read to follow them: a tad intrusive but not really -it’s something that had to be done.
The fight scene was well rendered. The Superior Spider-Man’s army’s organization and strategy added a dynamic quality to the fight as the Spiders were utilized depending on their strengths and readers got to see waves of Spider-Men attacking Daemos in spectacular fashion. There’s nothing quite as awesome as seeing Kaine leaping towards an Inheritor spikes drawn, with Spider-Woman gliding in from the left and Spider-Man 2099 holding up the rear.
The Ezekiel reveal was unexpected but understandable, as he was closely tied to the Morlun story line -and the gravity of the Other, the Bride, and the Scion was highlighted during his exposure. One thing I would say I thought could have been handled with more gravitas was the death of Assassin Spider-Man. Sure, in the heat of battle it would play out as it was drawn/written, but as a big player thus far in the event all he got was a tiny space on the right side of a wide panel depicting his death.
Amazing Spider-Man #10 proved to be a splendid continuation of the Spider-Verse, and with the promise of a fight between the two Spider-Men of 616 in the next issue, it hits us hard and leaves us wanting more.
