Batman 75 Year in Review: BvS Script Hoax!
By Skip Harvey
Batman’s 75th Anniversary draws to a close, so we here at Caped Crusades intend to fill these twilight days talking about the year that was. A lot of big Batman moments happened this year, so let’s review them as many as we can before our year-end countdown.
One of the biggest (though now forgotten) events of 2014 was the buzz surrounding what turned out to be a fake shooting script for Batman v Superman. The rumors were rampant, implying a whole cast of new characters like Metallo and Doomsday, and some surprising plot twists.
When it was revealed that the script was a phony, the whole scandal took a strange turn. The blogosphere exploded with accusations that Kevin Smith had been commissioned by DC to write the forgery to throw off the press (sounds more J.J. Abrams, to be honest).
Well, he didn’t.
"C’mon, kids… No major studio would let a guy like me near their franchises – even if it was for a dummy script meant solely to fool the news sites. (Don’t know if it’s true or not, but this Twitter user is claiming credit for a fugazi script that’s currently being reviewed online.)"
Turns out it was all a hoax by an ambitious gonzo writer called Arrogant Alien who wanted to teach rumor mongers a lesson.
Certain blogs reported the script as gospel, which I suppose was the point. Sadly, some of the rumors from the hoax are still thought to be true. Some people never learn.
