6 Actors Who Could Play Rick Flagg

Well, Tom Hardy is officially out of Suicide Squad, which means we need a new Rick Flagg. Apparently Warner Bros. is already reaching out to Jake Gyllenhall to replace him. I’m sure if Mr. Gyllenhall is available and willing he’ll do a fine job, but I’ve got 6 other actors in mind that I’d love to see take on the part if he falls through. I tried to stick to people who aren’t already superheroes in other current or upcoming films, so that ruled out choices such as The Rock, who is Black Adam in The Shazam! film currently in development, but who I do think would be great in the role.

#6. Sylvester Stallone: Sly Stallone would be a slightly different direction, as obviously they want a young guy to play Rick Flagg, but Flagg is supposed to be a guy with a lot of experience under his belt, and few actors bring that aspect to their roles like the guy who is star of the Expendables, Rocky, Rambo and too many other cheesy action films to count. Really the only thing he’s got going against him is his age, but Stallone just said he’s doing another Rambo movie, so he certainly isn’t slowing down anytime soon. Again, it’d be a slight change in direction, but if you want an experienced Rick Flagg, Stallone just might be your guy.

#5. Jason Statham: Another good choice might be Stallone’s Expendables co-star, action megastar Jason Statham. Granted, Statham might be a long odds choice as Rick Flagg is supposed to be as American as apple pie and Statham is well, not American. But there are few more certifiable action star ass-kickers these days than Statham, as pretty much every movie he is in basically falls under the plot of “Jason Statham beats the hell out of some guys”. I’m sure we’d have no problem believing Jason Statham can keep the various criminals of The Suicide Squad in line and that’s why he’d be a great choice to play Rick Flagg regardless of his nationality.

#4. Armie Hammer: Armie Hammer seems like a guy on the verge on the big breakout. He might’ve had it with Lone Ranger if that movie wasn’t such a stinker, but he certainly deserves another shot to be a big part of a new hero franchise. Aside from Will Smith, it certainly looks like Warner Bros is aiming for actors they can groom into huge stars they can bank on, and Armie Hammer has the youth and look on his side. So if they are looking for a young star who is on the verge to play Rick Flagg, I think Armie Hammer is the way to go.

#3. Denzel Washington: Here’s where I say why does Rick Flagg have to be white? Race certainly shouldn’t be an issue in casting the right person for the role. And obviously if box office megastar Will Smith can be Captain Boomerang (who is a white Aussie in the comics), we could certainly have another huge African American actor. The best quality Denzel Washington would bring to the role is his quiet menace. Sure, he’ll flash you that winning smile, but if you’ve seen some of his darker roles (Man on Fire and Training Day come to mind) you know behind that smile is a man who will kill you dead the second you mess with him. Assuming he’s interested, Denzel would certainly be the most capable actor to take on the role.

#2. Terry Crews: First off yes, I do think at least half the crew of Expendables movies could do a decent job of playing Rick Flagg, hence why my list is full of guys from those movies (even if I’m not a fan of the movies themselves).  Terry Crews would bring a size and intensity to the role that few could match. He also brings one other element most other actors on this list lack (or at least haven’t really shown): comedic chops. Sure, Suicide Squad is bound to be a dark film, but there’s bound to be some humorous moments as well, and Terry Crews is fantastic at comedy like few other actors his size. So combine that ability to do comedy with the size & intensity he is capable of displaying in his action roles and bringing that talent to the role of Rick Flagg could give him a whole new dimension.

#1. Mark Valley: In my mind, there is pretty much no one who exemplifies Rick Flagg in real life like Mark Valley. He showed off the action chops in the awesome but short-lived Human Target TV show, and just seems like a good old Captain America type, and Rick Flagg is probably the closest DC has to Captain America. I’m admittedly also just a huge fan of Mark Valley and think he deserves a big break out movie role. The role of Rick Flagg in Suicide Squad seems like one he’d be such a perfect fit for. He’s old enough to be experienced, but not too experienced, like Stallone might be, but not too green, like Armie Hammer might be. He looks like the apple pie all-American guy which is the mold Rick Flagg comes from. And assuming the search goes on longer than Jake Gyllenhall, I think he’d be the best overall choice to play Rick Flagg.
