Why I don’t want a Supaidaman solo title

Amazing Spider-Man #12 brought us one of the more effective ‘Spider-Man’ cameos when it introduced the popular Japanese Toei Spider-Man from the bonkers live action television series that aired in Japan in the late 70’s. The dramatic few moments when Peter Parker returned with Takuya Yamashiro and his companion battle-zord-style robot Leopardon was brilliant.

The cameo went down so well that the reaction to Marvel finally acknowledging this Spider-Man’s existence and having him be the one to save all of the Spiders from a powered-up Solus with his robot actually eclipsed the reaction to the final panel reveal of Uncle Ben being one of the alternate world Spideys, which was touted to ‘break the internet’.

In fact you could almost say that the reaction to Supaidaman’s appearance was at a similar level and on a similar scale to the way Edge of Spider-Verse #2’s Spider-Gwen was met. Of course, Spider-Gwen now has her own ongoing series thanks to the overwhelming public support of the character, so it’s no surprise that people are suggesting the same thing for Supaidaman.

However, as the title of this article suggests, I don’t want a Supaidaman solo series. Don’t get me wrong, if Marvel did make one I’d buy it because I love the character and all of his wacky antics but I really do hope that they keep him restrained to the Spider-Verse storyline as a neat little cameo and nothing more.

Now you might be wondering why I want this if I love the character so let me explain. I don’t feel that the editorial confines of an ongoing series, and the pressure there is to make money and be received well critically will in any way benefit a Supaidaman solo series, especially in an already jam-packed Spider-Man comic market.

Just look at All-New Ultimates and Superior Foes of Spider-Man, one series was well received and one not well received and both of those series had relatively short runs. This is the fate I predict for a Supaidaman solo series if one were to go ahead as I just don’t think there’s a big appeal from the general comic book buyer.

Now, I could be wrong, and if it turns out that I’m completely barking up the wrong tree here then fair enough, I win anyway because I get to read an awesome Supaidaman comic. It’s just that I really, honestly can’t see it being anything other than disappointing. What do you guys think?
