Marvel’s Spider-Man deal all-but confirms Captain America: Civil War appearance
By Daniel Wood
It’s happened. We’re all thrilled. Spider-Man has joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as completely unexpectedly announced by Marvel themselves yesterday. But let’s take a look at what was announced and see what the details will actually mean in terms of seeing the Webhead on-screen.
Here’s what we know
"Sony Pictures Entertainment and Marvel Studios have forged a deal that’ll see a new Spider-Man appear in an upcoming MCU film. Afterwards, Sony Pictures will release the next installment in the Spider-Man franchise on July 28, 2017"
So as you can see we’re expecting another Spider-Man film, with a different actor, on July 28 2017. However the part that leads me to believe that Spider-Man will be in Captain America: Civil War is the part that states that a new Spider-Man will ‘appear in an upcoming MCU film.’
Obviously Spider-Man hasn’t been officially confirmed to appear in the third Captain America film but when news broke that Cap 3 would be about the Civil War storyline people speculated that Spider-Man would appear in it, and that was before any deal had been made between Sony and Marvel.
But I’m fairly confident I’m right and I’ll sow you why. Let’s take a look at Marvel’s slate of comic book films and see where Spider-Man fits in.
We know that Spider-Man will appear in a MCU film before his solo-film outing in 2017 which means that the possible contenders are Avengers: Age of Ultron and Antman this year and then Captain America: Civil War, Doctor Strange and Guardians of the Galaxy 2. I’ve ruled out Avengers: Age of Ultron and Antman because I think they’re too close to being released to shoehorn Spider-Man in (although it could happen, especially in an end-credit scene.)
So that leaves Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and Captain America: Civil War. Quite obviously the film that makes the most sense, given that Spider-Man is such a big part of the narrative is Captain America: Civil War. Let me put it this way, it would make so sense and I’d be very surprised if Spider-Man didn’t appear in Captain America 3 and instead showed up in space for Guardians of the Galaxy 2.
