It’s official! After all the rumors, conspiracies, and leaked emails, it has officially been confirmed (by Marvel themselves!) that the Amazing Spider-Man will be appearing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe! Raise your glasses boys and girls, the Web-Head is coming home.
Sony Pictures Entertainment and Marvel Studios have forged a deal that’ll see a new Spider-Man appear in an upcoming MCU film. Afterwards, Sony Pictures will release the next installment in the Spider-Man franchise on July 28, 2017. The film will be co-produced by Kevin Feige and his Marvel team, as well as Amy Pascal -a name that we’ve been seeing since the rumors began, who regulated the launch of the franchise 13 years ago. This means there will be a new creative direction, a new actor, and a no doubt awesome story.
In return, Sony Pictures will continue to finance, distribute, own, and have creative control of any Spider-Man film. And most importantly, as part of the MCU, the two studios will look to the integration of other Marvel characters into Spider-Man films.
Bob Iger, Chairman and CEO of the Walt Disney Company had this to say: “Spider-Man is one of Marvel’s great characters, beloved around the world. We’re thrilled to work with Sony Pictures to bring the iconic web-slinger into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which opens up fantastic new opportunities for storytelling and franchise building.”
Doug Belgrad, president of Sony Picture Entertainment Motion Picture Group, added this: “Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios share a love for the characters in the Spider-Man universe and have a long, successful history of working together. This new level of collaboration is the perfect way to take Peter Parker’s story into the future.”
And Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige himself said some enthusiastic words, “I am thrilled to team with my friends at Sony Pictures along with Amy Pascal to produce the next Spider-Man movie. Amy has been deeply involved in the realization on film of one of the world’s most beloved characters. Marvel’s involvement will hopefully deliver the creative continuity and authenticity that fans demand from the MCU. I am equally excited for the opportunity to have Spider-Man appear in the MCU, something which both we at Marvel, and fans alike, have been looking forward to for years.”
To make room for Spider-Man’s entrance into the MCU, four movies will supposedly be delayed: Thor: Ragnarok to Nov. 3, 2017, Black Panther to July 6, 2018, Captain Marvel to Nov.2, 2018, and Inhumans to July 12, 2019. See more on how Spidey fits into the MCU and the revamped movie lineup here.
After all the speculation and wishes, our boy Spider-Man will finally get the chance at the Big Time – Avengers? Fantastic Four? The possibilities are endless, and so many story-lines from the comic-verse are now open to the cinematic universe. Get hyped, the Amazing Spider-Man is ready to sling jokes and webs alongside his fellow Marvel Super Heroes.
