41. Thor – “Know this, son of Coul … “

Asgardians are something else. A very literal race (though not as literal as Drax the Destroyer), they don’t always understand human ways; Loki continually hits on this in The Avengers, but that’s still two movies away.

Thor gives us a fish out of water story, a son trying to redeem himself and understand the role of a king. We watch Thor, God of Thunder, figuring out our earthly customs. Sure, he can eat an entire box of Pop-Tarts and still be hungry for plates of pancakes. But there’s no way we throw coffee mugs to the ground and scream, “Another!” to show how much we liked it (drunken stupors notwithstanding).

By the time the penultimate showdown happens with the Destroyer, Thor has reclaimed his title as the God of Thunder and seems to understand humans better than before. We think the hilarity is all said and done, until he walks up to Agent Phil Coulson in his Asgardian armor and utters, “Know this, Son of Coul.”

It cracks me up every time I catch the line (because FX likes to show Thor). It’s just so perfectly Thor to continue taking things literally, and for it to be someone’s name makes it even more believable and just that hilarious. I mean, he is Thor Odinson, son of Odin, so why wouldn’t Phil Coulson be son of Coul?
