23. Captain America: The First Avenger – SHIELD tries, fails to fool Cap

Steve Rogers is the perfect combination of brains and brawn. Dubbed “The Greatest Soldier the World Has Ever Known,” it’s baffling as to how SHIELD felt they could trick Steve into thinking he was not in the 21st century.

As Steve woke up from his decades-long slumber from being frozen in the Arctic, he’s greeted by a room made to look like the 1940s. Adding the last bit of frosting on top, Steve is also greeted by a female SHIELD agent dressed to resemble his love, Peggy Carter. Already suspecting something strange, Steve is given validation that he’s being tricked from a radio broadcast of a baseball game — because he was actually at that game in May of 1941.

When two well-built and well-armed SHIELD agents are sent in to quell Steve, they’re easily thrown through the walls of the room, revealing it to be a facade housed in a large building. Steve goes on to sprint through SHIELD, escaping onto the streets of a 2012 New York City. Confused and bewildered, Steve is finally greeted by Nick Fury who comes clean as to why they had to lie to him. The revelation causes a wave of emotions to wash over Steve’s face, knowing that all his friends and loved ones are now long gone and time has moved on without him.
