22. The Avengers – Thanos makes his first appearance
Who was the power behind the Chitauri anyway? Marvel made us wait until the very end of The Avengers to find out, and by that, I mean even well into the closing credits.
Stinging from his race’s defeat at the hands of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, the leader of the Chitauri heads to report to an unseen figure on a desolate asteroid. He complains that the humans were not the pushovers he was led to believe, and that they were unruly and could not be ruled. That’s a little bit of redundancy that’s always bothered me, by the way.
In any case, he then says the magic words: “To challenge them is to court … death.” Only one being in the Marvel Universe would find that phrase something to smile about, and we close in to see Thanos reveal himself with a grin.
It’s simply a pitch perfect way to introduce one of the biggest threats from the comics into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and as long as you stayed away from spoilers before heading to see The Avengers, it was an awesome surprise as well. Even for casual fans, Thanos’ initial appearance was dramatic enough to make them want to know more about this purple guy who would actually look forward to clashing with the Avengers. Good stuff.
