17. Captain America: The First Avenger – “I think it works.”

The symbol of Captain America is his shield. To see its origins in Captain America’s solo movie was a big moment. In all its vibranium, unpainted glory, it glows with power in the lights of the SSR bunker.

It would be cool enough just to see Cap pulling the shield out and having Howard Stark explain it to him. What makes the scene infinitely better is Peggy Carter.

Hayley Atwell brings it all as Agent Carter. She never plays the character just as a love interest for Captain America; she is no damsel in distress waiting for Cap to come save her. She’s a trained soldier like him, just minus the super serum.

Captain America is so proud of his new shield, even if Stark is hesitant to give it away. When Peggy shows up, he has a childlike smirk on his face and asks what she thinks. With absolutely no hesitation, she grabs a nearby gun and shoots. “Yes, I think it works,” she muses before striding away and fixing him with a pointed glare.

It’s not just Carter feeling slighted by Cap’s “accidental flirtation” in the previous scene; it shows the dynamic between them and basically proves that Cap should never underestimate her. It’s a point that Stark hammers home in an episode of Marvel’s Agent Carter: Captain America leaned on Peggy Carter for support as much as she leaned on him.

And he wanted her approval on his iconic shield.
