9. Guardians of the Galaxy – The team learns the power of dancing — and togetherness

One of the charms of Guardians of the Galaxy was that it never took itself too seriously, even when playing for some very real stakes. The final confrontation with Ronan was one of the times it treaded right on the edge of lapsing into parody but managed to pull itself back from the abyss to offer up a stunning conclusion.

I’m talking about the immortal line, “Dance off bro, me and you.” That comes from Star-Lord after he busts out his lousy dance moves and not-quite-as-bad singing as an incredulous Ronan is halted in his tracks. It’s well acted by Chris Pratt, Lee Pace and especially Zoe Saldana, whose Gamora wants no part of this.

It’s all a distraction for their teammates to be able to launch some sort of attack on the seemingly unbeatable Ronan. What really takes all of it to the next level is the part where Star-Lord gains possession of Ronan’s Infinity Stone. Previously, the Stone had destroyed all who attempted to wield its power. But when the rest of the Guardians join hands and share the strain, they’re able to save the day and put Ronan down for the count.

A little cheesy and corny? Sure I’d accept that argument. Most movies wouldn’t be able to pull something like this off, but because Guardians of the Galaxy did such a nice job blending action and comedy from the start, this works. Don’t act like you weren’t entertained.
