8. Captain America: The First Avenger – “I can do this”
Steve Rogers is and always will be the greatest patriot. Even though he was physically frail and small, Steve’s courage, drive, and heart were stronger and bigger than an army of men.
Seeing Steve’s potential and non-wavering good nature, Dr. Abraham Erskine personally selected him to be transformed in the Army’s Super-Soldier program. On the day of the procedure, an anxious Steve is given an injection of the Super-Soldier Serum and placed in a casket-like incubator. As the incubator lowers, machines expose the future Captain America to large doses of vita-rays. The experience can best be described as unpleasant because Steve grunts and screams in pain.
A worried Peggy Carter quickly commands the scientists to stop the procedure. However, Steve would have none of that. Calling out through the commotion of chaos and sparks, Steve says, “I can do this!” With sheer willpower, he tolerates the bombardment of vita-rays and becomes Captain America, proving that Steve’s greatest asset isn’t his newly gained strength and stamina, but his ability to face any challenge — no matter how daunting or arduous — and emerge victorious.
