Six Reasons You Should Be Watching Daredevil

6. The show is steeped in both comics and MCU lore

The movie connections are more obvious. The Battle of New York is referenced early on as the reason Hell’s Kitchen needs some serious urban renewal. Wilson Fisk’s consigliere laughs at mob toughs getting their butts kicked by a man in a black mask instead of someone with “an iron suit” or “a magic hammer.” Daredevil exists in that world, but is comfortably separate from it.

There are so many nods to the comics that it’s difficult to even know where to start. Like the best of Marvel’s TV and movie work so far, this show isn’t an adaptation of any specific Daredevil arc, but it picks and chooses different aspects from throughout the character’s print history. The writers discard things that wouldn’t make sense on television (like Daredevil’s yellow costume or Leland Owlsley dressing up like an owl) and keep the spirit of the source material as often as possible.

The result is a breath of fresh air, albeit one scented with urban decay and despair. If these aren’t enough reasons to call up Netflix on your device of choice as soon as possible, just give the pilot episode a try. I’m fairly confident you’ll come up with some of your own before the hour is over.
