What the heck happened between Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson?

In All New Captain America, the idea was that Sam would be the new Cap while Steve and Sharon Carter provided him with intel and support. Considering that they promptly lost contact with each other while Sam was infiltrating a Hydra base, that setup lasted for about a third of an arc.

That story also ended with an intriguing state of affairs where Hydra was supposed to have wormed its way into the power structure so completely that it had essentially already accomplished whatever it was planning. It seems unlikely we’ll revisit that concept after Secret Wars given the way the whole Marvel Universe has been altered, but I guess you never know.

In the meantime, there’s been no real signs of a schism between these tow old friends, yet the symbolism in this teaser image is unmistakeable, and comments made by Iron Man in the Avengers Free Comic Book Day issue drive home the fact that there’s been a falling out. What could possibly happen to make it so that these old friends and former partners aren’t on speaking terms? There are eight months between Secret Wars and the beginning of All-New All-Different Marvel, and for the past and present Captain Americas, they must be eventful ones.
