Hollywood anime/manga adaptation films have failed miserably at the box office for a long time. I examined the reasons why by conducting a survey. The goal was to find out how anime fans felt about some of the adaptations that Hollywood has created, and find solutions that may help in the future. A total of 300 people took the survey, and from the information I gathered, fans seem to agree that casting, direction, marketing and poor use of source material are the tipping point between success and failure. Here is a peek at the results from the survey:

The films I highlight in this article are as follows: Fist of the North Star, Oldboy, Speed Racer, and Dragon Ball: Evolution.

If you don’t believe me about the massive failure of these films, look at the revenue stats for each film according to BoxOfficeMojo.com

Fist of the North Star

  • Straight to DVD
  • Finances are unknown

Speed Racer

  • Budget: $ 120 million
  • Box office: $42 million domestic, $93 million international

Oldboy

  • Budget: $30 million
  • Box office: $2 million domestic, $4 million international

Dragon Ball: Evolution

  • Budget: 45 million
  • Box office: $9 million domestic, $48 million international

If you know anything about how box office numbers and how inflation works, you will notice that these numbers are tantamount to complete failure. With that said, let’s examine the list of reasons for why that might be.
