Batman V Superman Rumor: Jena Malone’s Role Revealed

Via Latino-Review, we now have multiple rumors pointing to the role Jena Malone has been cast in for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.  Ever since Malone was spotted on set last year, fans have been speculating who she might be playing.  The most likely character — due to director Zack Snyder repeatedly saying that Batman’s rivalry with Superman is inspired by Frank Miller’s Batman: The Dark Knight Returns (1986) — was Carrie Kelley, the third Robin.  Because Earth-31 is the universe that The Dark Knight Returns is set in, Carrie Kelley is the third Robin and not the fourth.  Tim Drake, who becomes Robin after Jason Todd, is not in this universe.  But those are technicalities for another article.  Back to our original purpose …

Jena Malone is rumored to be cast as Barbara Gordon / Batgirl / Oracle.  It’s most likely that in the DC Cinematic Universe, Malone will be playing a Barbara who has already become Oracle.

Bruce Wayne / Batman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is being depicted as an older, grizzled Dark Knight who has already been through the death of a Robin.  He might have other past tragedies, and one of them could be the devastating attack on Barbara by The Joker.  Those who are familiar with the story of Batman: The Killing Joke (March 1988) know that The Joker paralyzed Barbara after he shot her through the spine, ending her career as Batgirl and setting her on the course of becoming Oracle — a computer expert and information whiz who aids Batman in his fight against crime.
