‘The Killing Joke’ Still a Best Seller
By Skip Harvey
Alan Moore’s The Killing Joke is often considered one of the greatest Batman tales of all time. The layered tome from 1988 offers us a view into the sadism of the Joker, even revealing one possible version of his origin story. It changed the trajectory of Barbara Gordon’s character arc for decades and made us look at rethink the fragile nature of our own moral compasses.

In July, 2015, Killing Joke was the best selling trade paperback in the country. It’s just that good.
"DC placed eight titles in the Top 20 Adult Graphic Novels chart of bookstore bestsellers in July, based on info provided exclusively to ICv2.com by Nielsen BookScan. All but one of them were classics new and old, with The Killing Joke, originally published in 1988, at #1. It would be a surprise if the DC surge is not tied to promotional activity with one or more of the major book retailers, but regardless of the reason it’s good to see DC in the Top 20 in these numbers.BookScan Top 20 Graphic Novels in July 2015RankTitleAuthorPublisher1BATMAN: THE KILLING JOKE DLX EDALAN MOOREDC COMICS2TOKYO GHOUL VOL. 1SUI ISHIDAVIZ MEDIA3AMERICAN BORN CHINESEGENE LUEN YANGMACMILLAN4NARUTO VOL. 70MASASHI KISHIMOTOVIZ MEDIA5FUN HOME: A FAMILY TRAGICOMICALISON BECHDELMARINER BOOKS6BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNSFRANK MILLERDC COMICS7SUICIDE SQUAD VOL. 1 (N52)ADAM GLASSDC COMICS8CIVIL WARMARK MILLARMARVEL COMICS9MINIONS VOL. 1 BANANA!TITAN COMICSTITAN COMICS10WYTHES VOL. 1SCOTT SNYDERIMAGE COMICS11MARVEL ENCYCLOPEDIA: THE DEFINITIVE GUIDE HCMATT FORBECKDK PUBLISHING12BATMAN: YEAR ONEFRANK MILLERDC COMICS13BATMAN VOL. 1: THE COURT OF OWLSSCOTT SNYDERDC COMICS14WATCHMENALAN MOOREDC COMICS15SAGA VOL. 1BRIAN K.
