Meet Your New Caped Crusader: Jordan Valdés!
I’m Jordan, and I’m the newest staff writer here at Caped Crusades. I’ve been a Bat-fan all my life, and I couldn’t be more excited to be covering Batman news now! As per tradition, what follows are my responses to the official Caped Crusades “get to know you” questions:
Who’s your favorite Batman character?
This could sound generic, but my favorite Batman character is Batman. I can’t remember my first Batman moment, since I was probably still in the crib, but Batman himself is who got me hooked on comics. He has always intrigued me, because he doesn’t have any super-powers, so he uses skills and smarts to achieve what he wants to. I have also always loved the idea of how the most important thing to him is protecting the people of Gotham, and how he feels that’s his one top responsibility. I might get some hate for this: while I believe Kevin Conroy’s Timmverse Batman is the best rendition of the character, my favorite rendition is actually the one that appears in The Batman, voiced by Rino Romano. I loved the version of the Batsuit that appeared in the show, I think Romano’s voice job was really underrated, and I loved the stories from that show.
What’s your favorite Batman creative team?
I don’t really have a favorite Batman artist, but my favorite writer is Grant Morrison. His Batman: RIP arc is my favorite Batman story of all time. Morrison wrote that arc beautifully. We get to see Bruce at his lowest of lows, and we then see his willpower to return and take down Dr. Hurt.
What’s your college/educational background?
I went to two years of high school in Atlanta, and then went to “early college” at Bard College at Simon’s Rock in Massachusetts, where I’m currently studying Spanish and Latin American Studies.
What do you do for a living?
I’m currently just a student. Hoping to get a job working for a local comic book shop when I’m back in Atlanta for the summer.
What do you like to do for fun?
Anything Batman/DC Comics-related! I like to read comic books, watch cartoons, and play video games. I also am a basketball fan, and I enjoy watching my hometown Atlanta Hawks and Atlanta Dream.
What is your favorite Batman moment in any medium?
This is the toughest question. There are so many moments that I love, including some from The Batman and RIP as I alluded to above. However, I’ll go with one that’s pretty fresh on my mind as I just re-watched this film: the flashback scene in Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker. This is really one of the most iconic moments in the history of the Timmverse. We get to see the family dynamic that was developed between Batman, Batgirl, and Tim Drake Robin, we get to see the death of The Joker, and we get to see what hardened Bruce so much against the idea of allowing Terry McGinnis to be his successor as Batman.
