. What better way to pass these
so very long
two days than to break out our scrutinizing scalpels and dissect what we have. Dissecting a less than 50-second trailer? Are you nuts, Steve? Yes, I am. When it comes to the Man of Steel or the Dark Knight, you can never do too much. Though this is just a small excerpt of what we’ll be getting this Wednesday, the scene tells a lot, so let’s explore …
There is no doubt that Batman is in some type of nightmare. He’s confused and tense. Suddenly, he hears impending footsteps and … BOOM! Superman launches down. And might I saw what a powerful landing. That gust of wind raises a small dust cloud among the soldiers who seem to be serving our Man of Steel. They quickly kneel to their god.
Batman is anxious as he sees Superman approach him. Superman has a very cocky and smarmy scowl on his face. He almost seems disgusted with Batman. As Superman nears his target, the two men give each other a staredown. Superman finally rips the cowl from Batman’s face revealing an angry and panting Bruce Wayne. Superman then takes a quick unimpressed gander at the empty cowl. This too short teaser quickly cuts to black where we’re treated to the title slowly appearing.
First off, who are the people tied up with Batman? No one says a word to anyone. From brief glimpses of their gear, I’m gathering that they’re mercenaries of some type. Did Batman hire them to help him track Superman? And we’re pretty sure that this is a nightmare because Superman would never allow anyone to bow or kneel before him. This is Batman’s worst nightmare, his badly informed point-of-view of the motivations of the Last Son of Krypton.
Before I part, I’d like to also add that as a screenwriter, we’re trained to show and not tell. This teaser has zero dialogue and is pure show. Zack Snyder’s direction really comes through here. We know nothing, yet so much … if that’s even a concept. But you know what I mean. The tension and paranoia really come through here. Wednesday can’t arrive soon enough!
