Watch The First X-Men: Apocalypse Trailer And See The Oncoming End Of Everything

When Jean Grey has a “bad dream” about the end of the world, that’s bad. When someone mentions that the Bible may have gotten the idea for the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse from the world’s first mutant instead of the other way around, that’s even worse. And when Professor Charles Xavier says he’s never felt power like this before … look out.

All of these ominous signs are in the first X-Men: Apocalypse trailer, which you can see below. It’s a nice blend of building up the villain as the most dangerous threat the X-Men have ever faced for non-comics fans, and it also shows off both new and returning cast members in effective fashion.

Oh yeah, and it also ends with a really nice look at one particular character in his most iconic appearance yet during this particular trilogy of X-Men films.

It looks pretty exciting, and the quality of the two previous films makes me confident this one will be quite good as well. My only gripe is with the design of Apocalypse himself. In an era where filmmakers have no problem going overboard with CGI even in places it’s unnecessary, it seems strange to me that Bryan Singer and company opted for restraint here. If ever there was an X-Men villain worth blowing the special effects budget for, Apocalypse is it. It’d be awesome to see him in over-the-top, size and shape-changing ridiculousness.

And who knows? Maybe we will and they just don’t want to give that away during the first trailer. That would be the kind of restraint that actually would be a nice change from the norm right now.

In any case, we’re expecting to see this on the big screen in front of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and hopefully it’s even more impressive in that environment. As the trailer itself reminds us, X-Men: Apocalypse is on the way on Memorial Day 2016.
