Batman on Film

Batman is probably the one DC property that has had the biggest presence in film.  The history of Batman’s appearance on the silver-screen date back to the 1940s, only a mere few years after his introduction in the comics.  Though each series of Batman films occur in their universe, there are some interesting related qualities.

Did You Know?

  • Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will be the first film involving Batman not to be released during the summer season.
  • This marks the first time that someone currently portraying Batman on film will be older than the actor who portrayed the character before him.  Ben Affleck is 18 months older than Christian Bale.  Bale is 13 years younger than George Clooney.  Clooney is 18 months younger than Val Kilmer.  Kilmer is 8 years younger than Michael Keaton.
  • This will be the second time on film that Wayne Manor will not be the primary residence of Bruce Wayne.  The first time was in The Dark Knight (2008), when the explanation was that the mansion was being rebuilt after the events of Batman Begins (2005).
  • Batman’s first appearance outside of illustrated media was on the silver screen in 1943 in the 15-chapter serial Batman starring Lewis Wilson as Batman and Douglas Croft as Robin.
