Shoulder Patch Worn by Superman’s Soldiers
The nefarious-looking “Superman Soldiers” seen in the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice trailers really act like the Stormtroopers to Superman’s Vader. But the House of El crest that they wear so prominently on their shoulders may be an homage to something much more noble — the death of Superman in the comics.

- The collector’s edition of Superman #75 — the issue where Superman was killed by Doomsday — came in a black bag emblazoned with a bleeding “S” symbol. Inside the bag, there was the comic book itself, Daily Planet obituary, a trading card, stamps, poster, and a black armband with a red “S” on it. The design of the armband is similar to the “S” symbol worn by the soldiers seen in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
- During Superman’s funeral in the comics, all the mourners, including the Justice League and various superheroes, all wore a black armband with Superman’s “S” symbol on it.
