Batman’s Grappling Gun

Batman travels Gotham’s skyscraper jungle as naturally as a person walks on a sidewalk.  He does this with the aid of his trusty (and I’m not even sure if we can even say “rusty”) grappling gun.  In Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, we see him use it to make a quick escape from a powerful blast.  What most people don’t know is that the grappling gun is a relatively recent addition to the Dark Knight’s array of gadgets.

Did You Know?

  • The grappling gun was the invention of the Tim Burton / Michael Keaton Batman films.  Before the films, Batman manually tossed the grappling hook to his intended target.
  • The grappling gun was first introduced in Batman (1989) during the scene when Jack Napier’s — the Joker’s identity before his transformation — gang shoots at Batman and Batman uses the grappling gun to pull one of the assailants over a railing.
  • Batman also had a variation on the grappling gun: a gun which creates a makeshift zipline between two objects.  This was seen during the rescue of Vicki Vale from the art museum in Batman (1989), and in a scene in Batman Returns (1992).
  • Batman: The Animated Series had Batman use his grappling gun on a regular basis.  It was probably the most used device on his utility belt.
  • In Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, which was grounded in reality, Batman’s grappling gun was gas-powered with a magnetic “hook” that was rated for 350 pounds.
