Jesse Eisenberg talks Lex Luthor’s complexities, and teases going bald in Batman v Superman

Jesse Eisenberg is the latest actor to portray villainous billionaire Lex Luthor, and whatever you think of his performance that we’ve seen thus far in the Batman v Superman trailers, it certainly is a different take. Esienberg talked with the LA Times about what kind of guy Luthor is in Batman v Superman and comparing his performance to past Luthors.

Eisenberg said that Luthor has a “back story that’s tragic and an emotional inner life that’s authentic.” And that Luthor sees Superman as a genuine threat to humanity. As for his performance and being compared to others that have played the role:

"When you’re doing a movie like this and playing a character that’s already been played, the further away it is from those previous incarnations the better. Because chances are, especially with a guy like Gene Hackman or Kevin Spacey, you’re not going to get favorably compared."

And while you saw a Lex Luthor with plenty of hair in the latest Batman v Suerman trailers, Eisenberg promises that Luthor will have a scene where he goes bald and called it “the greatest scene that I’ve ever gotten to take part in.”

I agree that Esienberg should be going for a different vibe than say Gene Hackman or Kevin Spacey. Hackman was pretty much a comedic take in some very light films. Spacey, who should’ve been a natural in the role, wasn’t actually that good in it. For a more serious tone, he should absolutely not be looking to imitate the performance of those two actors. Whether or not his take really works, we’ll have to wait until Batman v Superman comes out in March.
