2. Avengers: Age of Ultron

Release date: May 1, 2015

Opening weekend total: $191.3 million

This movie was the complete opposite of Deadpool. After the first Avengers movie made all the money (note: might have to fact check that …) in 2012, there was no shortage of breathless predictions for how high Age of Ultron could soar in its first three days. Surely, it could make $200 million, but could it reach $225 million or more?

The answer, as it turned out, was no. Disney and Marvel had to settle for just a tad under $200 million, which has to be considered the best possible “disappointment” of all time. Part of the magic of the first outing for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes was simply seeing all the characters together for the first time, and the sequel didn’t have that going for it.

Thus, it had to make it on its own merits, and while most fans felt Age of Ultron was just fine, not many were rushing to anoint it the Greatest Superhero Movie ever. It even got shown up by some dinosaurs later that same summer, but despite not performing quite up to the lofty expectations set for it ahead of time, this is one of only two superhero movies to crack $175 million in its opening weekend. And that’s not too shabby at all.
