10 Biggest Superhero Movie Opening Weekends Of All Time
By Nick Tylwalk
8. Iron Man 2
Release date: May 7, 2010
Opening weekend total: $128.1 million
After Iron Man proved a huge hit and turned Robert Downey Jr. from talented from struggling thespian into one of the biggest stars around, of course people were going to show up in big numbers on opening weekend for Iron Man 2. Plus, all the cool preview art and trailers with War Machine were awesome. Two Iron Men were certainly better than one, right?
It didn’t necessarily work out that way, with Iron Man 2 widely considered one of the weakest Marvel Cinematic Universe entries. Hey, it happens. Even Marvel can’t hit a home run every time it steps to the plate.
Ironically, the lukewarm response to this film didn’t hurt its follow-up, and every Iron Man movie opened stronger than the one before. With that in mind, it’s at least somewhat surprising Marvel never pushed harder for an Iron Man 4.
