Gotham Preview/Synopsis – S02E12 – “Wrath Of The Villains: Mr. Freeze”
By Steve Lam
It’s been three months since Fox’s Gotham went on it’s hiatus. The city that promises to one day see hope in a vigilante dressed as a bat has gone through quite a half-year. Jim Gordon saw his former love, Barbara Kean, go completely insane. She is, by the way, currently in a coma from falling out of a church window. Theo Galavan, once hailed as a savior of this hellish city, was exposed for who he really was, and brutally killed by the vengeance-filled Penguin after Galavan murdered his mother. Speaking of the “bird-man”, he’s now on the run for the murder of the evil billionaire. So what will we be returning to when Gotham premieres Monday?

The second half of Season 2 promises to introduce more famous villains. The top two being promoted so far are Dr. Strange, played by B.D. Wong, and Mr. Freeze, played by Nathan Darrow. Readers who read my recaps know how I feel about Gotham constantly introducing known Batman-universe established characters who shouldn’t even exist in this time period. Mr. Freeze’s more established backstory, which was solidified in Batman: The Animated Series, gave Batman the opportunity to show that he was also a detective — by finding out that Freeze isn’t pure evil. He only did the things he did to save his wife, and the true villain was actually Victor Fries’s employer.
With that in mind, I am actually quite interested in seeing Hugo Strange because he was already established before Bruce Wayne donned the cowl of the Dark Knight. On top of that, Hugo Strange has been character rarely explored outside of comics sans the DC Animated Universe. And can we all just say that for everything the show gets wrong, Gotham did the perfect casting for this character. B.D. Wong looks like he jumped right out of the comics.
So, get ready for this Monday, February 29, 2016 when new episodes of Gotham leap (yes, a total pun because of the date) back onto television. Here’s the official synopsis for “Wrath of the Villains: Mr. Freeze”:
"Penguin takes a hit for Galavan’s murder, but doesn’t let Gordon off easily. Meanwhile, Gordon and Bullock investigate the body-snatching spree of Victor Fries (guest star Nathan Darrow), one of Gotham’s preeminent cryogenics engineers."
And, of course, the promo for the episode:
