Batman V Superman: Batman Is An “Executioner”?

Yes, you read that correctly — Batman will be an “executioner.”  Whether that means he’s a “go-getter” and “doer”, or someone who kills, still remains to be seen.  Hey, those aren’t my words, they’re producer Charles Roven’s.  Speaking briefly with Empire Magazine, Roven mentioned the DC Extended Universe’s take on Batman.

"[Batman] is not giving people a chance … He is more than a vigilante. He has become not only the cop, if you will, he has also become the jury and executioner."

Roven also states that this older, grizzled Batman will be even more cynical than the Batman seen in the Nolan/Bale Dark Knight Trilogy.

"He’s older … [and] he’s seen the worst of what man can do. He’s been darkened by it, he’s tougher, he’s angrier, I guess … he’s still lost those that are near and dear to him, and not necessarily from old age or disease."

One of the cornerstones of Batman’s philosophy has always been not to kill (well, initially in the early days of his comics appearance, he did it with no remorse), so I highly doubt the DCEU will go as far as letting the Dark Knight take a life.  Recently, it was revealed that Frank Miller and Darren Aronofsky wanted to do a Batman film.  Yet, when they finished the script, Warner Bros. thought it was much too dark.  The movie was never made.

One of the main complaints from audiences has been about the dark, grim tone seen in the trailers for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.  What the general population needs to know is that DC is not all “Super Friends” and “Wonder Twins.”  The comics have evolved and grown since the 1980s and 1990s.  Stories are much deeper and serious.  Even with those things in mind, I highly doubt Warner Bros. will go as far as destroying one of their most revered characters in this way.  Roven may just be hinting at the Dark Knight’s determination and stubbornness when he faces off with the Man of Steel later this month.
