Margot Robbie says she tried on many different looks for Suicide Squad, including a certain classic look

Margot Robbie will be the first person to ever inhabit the role of Harley Quinn on the big screen in Suicide Squad. But her look in the movie may have caused some controversy, not only because she’s definitely more sexed up, but it’s not her “classic” look that most are probably more familiar with. That would be Harley Quinn wearing a jester outfit and white makeup, because she choose to look like that thanks to being obsessed with the Joker. According to Margot Robbie, that more classic look was given consideration for Suicide Squad, as well as many others:

"We tried on every variation of the costume. I cannot emphasize enough how many outfits, and how many variations of the Harley Quinn costume we tried. We tried the court jester costume, we tried the corset and skirt, we tried leather pants, we tried literally every type of costume possible for her. I really love where we ended up. And who knows, maybe in the sequels we’ll go with the court jester one. I think there’s a world of possibilities."

I certainly would’ve preferred the classic Jester costume, but maybe it just didn’t look right, it’s certainly not unusual for a look to work in one format of media, and not work in another. I think, being that this look is much closer to the look of “New 52” Harley Quinn, another worry is that Suicide Squad is going with Harley Quinn’s “New 52” origin, which some consider much worse. Her original deal was that she fell madly in love with the Joker after having therapy sessions with him and put on that jester costume and helped Joker break out of Arkham and was at his side faithfully for many years afterward, though she’s become mostly independent of him of late. In Harley’s “New 52”, origin, it removes some of her agency, as to make her transformation complete, Joker threw Harley in a vat of acid much like he was thrown. We’ll see if that particular origin if any is explored when Suicide Squad opens in theaters August 5th!
