Looks like another actor will be switching comic book movie universes.  Via The Hollywood Reporter, Oscar-winning actor J.K. Simmons has been cast as Commissioner James Gordon.

J.K. Simmons is no stranger to comic books as he once played the iconic J. Jonah Jameson in the Sam Raimi / Tobey Maguire Spider-Man series of films, and also voiced the same character in multiple animated series from Marvel.  Working with DC is also not a first for the actor because Simmons voiced the character of General Wade Eiling in the animated series Justice League Unlimited.

Jameson started his career in 1986 where he appeared in Popeye Doyle.  He later went on and appeared in Law & Order, Homicide: Life on the Street, Spin City, Everwood, The West Wing, and a myriad of other hit shows.  His first film role was in The Ref (1994).  He later became the live-action incarnation of Peter Parker’s short-tempered boss J. Jonah Jameson in Spider-Man (2002).  The role would last for three movies until Spider-Man 3 (2007).  Simmons has won many awards and accolades for his work.  Most recently, he received the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Whiplash (2014).

The character of Commisioner James Gordon virtually needs no introduction.  Created by Bill Finger, Bob Kane, Lawrence Donovan, Henry Ralston, and John Nanovic, the character made his first appearance in Detective Comics #27 (May 1939).  As one of Batman’s greatest allies, Gordon is just as iconic as the most famous superheroes in DC’s vast universe.

For Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, it was long-rumored that James Gordon may have already retired or died at the onset of the film’s current timeline.  Now we know it’s not true.  At the time of this report, it’s unknown how the character of Gordon will fit into the story of The Justice League Part One.  Fans can get their first glimpses of a proto-Justice League when Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice releases on March 25, 2016.

The Justice League Part One has a United States release date of November 17, 2017 and is set to start filming on April 11, 2016 in London and Iceland.  It will be directed by Zack Snyder, written by Chris Terrio, and will star Henry Cavill as Clark Kent / Superman, Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne / Batman, Gal Gadot as Diana Prince / Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as Barry Allen / The Flash, Ray Fisher as Victor Stone / Cyborg, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, and Amber Heard as Mera.
