Batman v Superman won the battle of the box office and against critics with a huge opening weekend

Well, overwhelmingly bad reviews couldn’t stop Batman v Superman from conquering the box office this weekend, especially globally. Batman v Superman had the 6th biggest North American opening of all time (still topped by The Force Awakens, Jurassic World, both Avengers movies and Iron Man 3). But worldwide is where it really cleaned up, grossing an astounding $424 million to have the biggest worldwide opening of any comic book movie to date.

No matter what you thought of Batman v Superman, that is super-impressive. I wasn’t a huge fan of the film, but I didn’t think it was the insult to cinema many critics seem to label it as. I do really hope they take some lessons from this and use it to make Justice League a more coherent film. Will Civil War be able to top it with both films being roughly equal length? It’s certainly a possibility.

But of course as I’ve stated previously, this record-setting opening weekend means nothing if there’s a massive drop off from here on out. I really think that in order for Batman v Superman to be considered a success in the long run, it has to break a billion dollars globally. That’s more than double it’s initial box office opening, and it’s rare that any film doesn’t have a significant drop off it’s second weekend out. Will fans continue to show up at the the box office to drive Batman v Superman to that much-needed goal? For now, Warner Bros. & DC can consider Batman v Superman a win, but they certainly cannot rest easy just yet. Batman v Superman is in theaters now. If you’ve already seen it, do you plan on seeing it in theaters again? Let us know in the comments!
