Suicide Squad star Common talks about the movie and working with Jared Leto

When rapper/actor Common was cast in Suicide Squad, there were a ton of rumors about what role he would play. Was it as Green Lantern John Stewart, a role he would’ve had if George Miller’s Justice League movie had actually happened? Was it as one of Aquaman’s deadliest enemies, Black Manta? Was it as the Tattooed Man, which was suggested by his appearance in leaked pics from the Suicide Squad set?

Well, all we really know at this point about Common’s role is that his character’s name is “Monster T” and that he is a henchman of Jared Leto’s Joker. Monster T could still easily be The Tattooed Man, a villain who’s power is to make the tattoos on his body come to life and attack his opponents. While he didn’t really explain more about his role in Suicide Squad, Common did talk to Collider about why he wanted to do Suicide Squad in the first place:

"I just knew that world was a gritty comic book world that I haven’t seen. I feel like, with so many comic book movies being made, I wanted to be a part of one of the ones that is special. And if I’m going to be a part of a comic movie, I don’t want it to just be the same story, where you can just place the new name and it’s the same story that you see. I’ve gotta say, one of the major reasons I knew it would be something cool and could be special is (director) David Ayer. I love his work. I got to work with him on Street Kings, but then I watched End of Watch and the dude is good, man.I was excited about working with him, being a movie with Will Smith and Viola Davis and Jared Leto, and playing opposite The Joker. I was like, “God, this is going to be exciting!” I think Suicide Squad could be a story told in a new way."

Common also talked about working with Jared Leto on the set of Suicide Squad and echoed many cast members earlier comments about Leto being very in character and the first time really meeting him was after filming the movie:

"From the time I stepped on the set, I was my character and he was his character. There was no in between. It wasn’t like, “Hey, man, how’s your family doing?”I saw him at the Oscars, and I saw Margot Robbie, too. It was almost the first time meeting each other. With Margot, it was a little different. But I was standing in my space, being the character, so I love that Jared Leto was doing that."

Well, Common is a pretty entertaining actor, so I hope he’s actually The Tattooed Man and not random Joker henchman with a cool name. It makes the odds of his character actually living through Suicide Squad much higher. Suicide Squad opens in theaters August 5th.
