Warner Bros. Releasing Fewer Films Due To Batman v Superman?

WB reportedly doubling down on known quantities in face of Batman v Superman’s performance at the box office

Batman v Superman had a lot to be happy about it’s opening weekend, grossing a record-breaking global box office. But the film appears to have little in the way of legs, suffering a humongous drop in it’s second weekend, and most betting that Melissa McCarthy’s new comedy, “The Boss” will take the box office crown from it this weekend. Sure, Batman v Superman may turn a profit, but it’s not doing nearly as well as Warner Bros. really hoped it would, and that may be causing some strategic shifts at the film studio.

But oddly enough, Batman v Superman’s performance isn’t actually affecting Warner Bros. plans for DC films. heck, they just added two untitled DC films to their schedule for the next 5 years. Actually, the action the studio seems to be taking is at least heavily considering shrinking the number of original products, relying on more supposedly surefire bets with brands like Lego, Harry Potter and of course DC comics according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Now it’s important to say that Batman v Superman doesn’t share all (or even most) of the blame here. Warner. Bros had a 2015 filled with massive flops like Pan & Jupiter Ascending. It’s more of a cumulative affect of none of these films really performing to expectations. But I think executives really expected Batman v Superman to be so successful it basically made all that not matter, and it just won’t do well enough for that to be the case. But of course this at best something the studio is “considering”. We may never see it actually happen or at least won’t see any effects of it unless we actually  get news of the studio releasing far fewer films than they have previously. As far as DC films it seems like WB is waiting to see how the next several do (Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman and probably especially Justice League Part One) before any changes are made there. We will of course report if Zack Snyder is booted or the Cyborg movie is canceled or any other such actions as soon as we get wind of them, so stay tuned!
