David Ayer All For R-Rated Suicide Squad 2

David Ayer would lobby for Suicide Squad 2 to be rated R if it was warranted

Suicide Squad will be definitely be rated PG-13. There is no question about this, even though it literally stars some of the most vicious homicidal characters in the DC universe. But R-rated comic book films seem to be making a bit of a comeback in the public consciousness, so assuming Suicide Squad is successful enough to warrant a sequel, would it be a good idea to make that sequel R-rated?

Suicide Squad director David Ayer says he’d be down for that idea, noting that he thinks it would “be worth lobbying for”, but also talked about the fact that from the beginning, Suicide Squad was planned as a PG-13 movie:

"For an R movie, you have to decide to do it right out the gate, and that was never the case here. We were always going to hit the PG-13 rating. But the film is meant to be that. It’s got edge, and it’s got attitude. And it’s got its own voice… There’s a lot in the film that’s going to surprise people."

As Suicide Squad was designed from the very beginning as a PG-13 film, it seems highly unlikely that we will see some R-rated cut released later on home video as is the case with Batman v Superman. As far as going R for the sequel? I don’t really see that happening because R-rated movie characters would have to gel with the rest of the PG-13 DC universe, and I don’t think Warner Bros. would go with that idea. Also, if you can make an awesome Suicide Squad film that is PG-13 (and this looks like an awesome movie so far), making the follow-up R just seems gratuitous. Suicide Squad opens in theaters August 5th.
