Joel Kinnaman Says Suicide Squad Was A ‘Lovefest’
Joel Kinnaman says everyone “had a ball” making Suicide Squad
We’ve heard a lot about how Suicide Squad was on set. Jared Leto had a bunch of strange behavior, David Ayer was “intense”, but according to actor Joel Kinnaman who plays Rick Flagg in the Suicide Squad movie, the cast just got along really well from the start and had a great time:
"We had a ball on this movie. It really was just, from the get go, we all just got along and David Ayer, the director, he did this atmosphere and these challenges that we sort of had to overcome together. It was a lovefest the whole five months. It was tough but it was lovefest. There’s just so much going on in this movie. It’s just so rich. This movie has like 8, 9, 10 characters that all have a lot of contrast and different sides and all get their moment and everybody playing them feels really committed to it. A lot seriousness, emotional depth, but then a lot fun and humor in this film. There’s a ton of stuff I look forward to seeing."
Did the ‘lovefest’ extend to Jared Leto’s very method portrayal of The Joker in Suicide Squad? Not really, but not because no one got along with him or it was a bad experience working with him, according to Kinnaman, who speaks highly of Leto’s performance:
"The rest of the squad, we became a family. Jared [Leto], he was on the outside doing his thing. He did something really impressive with this role. He had some big shoes to fill and he sure as hell filled them."

Given how into character Jared Leto got for Suicide Squad, it reall isn’t all that surprisng that he wouldn’t bond with the rest of the cast, especially given that he isn’t part of the squad. And if he was and spent all of his time with them, his devotion to “method” might’ve really gotten on their nerves. Clearly the cast member who spent the most time on the Suicide Squad with Leto had to be Margot Robbie as she’s playing Harley Quinn, so it would be really interesting to get some in-depth thoughts on working with him from her. Suicide Squad opens in theaters August 5th.
