Suicide Squad: Will Joker Have An Origin?

Will we see the birth of The Joker in Suicide Squad?

Suicide Squad doesn’t seem like a movie where you have a lot of time for origin stories. There’s whole bunch of villains to quickly introduce and get to know. The Joker might be the least necessary of all, not because everyone knows his origin, but that he has no origin (sorry guys, Killing Joke is NOT cannon, and even if it was, it and several other possible origin stories have pretty much been thrown out because even the Joker has said he’s revamped his origin so many times, he’s isn’t sure which one is real anymore). It’s part of his mystique, he’s just this guy who really appeared out of nowhere and leaves this whirlwind of chaos wherever he goes.

But that might not be the case in Suicide Squad. Jared Leto hints that they took the character in a new direction for the movie, and that might require at least a bit of origin story, but he isn’t outright saying it:

"I don’t think I’m allowed to talk about that so much. But we walked in a completely new direction. I think we knew that we had to do that. It was important to do that. When the Joker has been done and done so well, it gives you a bit of an indication of where you shouldn’t go. There’s a bit of a map there. That’s the good part about it."

Look, I’m no saying you can’t have a Joker origin story. He had one in the 1989 Batman film, and no one has a problem with that. But Suicide Squad just seems like the wrong movie for this, it’s too densely packed with characters in order to give such an important origin story the breathing room it really needs. Save it for a solo Batman film, it’s not like they aren’t making at least one of those. Suicide Squad opens in theaters August 5th.
